Gender stereotypes are inherently political; they can be used as tools for manipulating power relations between men and women. They are naturalised within society through a process of reproduction and maintenance. To this end, gender stereotypes become ‘… self-fulfilling: if we expect certain behaviours, we may act in ways that in fact create and reinforce such behaviours’. 
Growing up, a strict version of manliness was never instilled in me, either. My family owns a construction company, but I never heard my dad or my uncles ever talk about fighting when we were on a job site, and they seemed to have opinions about those who would (idiots). My dad didn’t go to the bar after work, didn’t engage in tough-guy talk, and in the few moments I saw him have to stand his ground he always did it in the way that I now do: with words.
Scholars cite integrity and equality as masculine values in male-male relationships  and virility in male-female relationships. Legends of ancient heroes include the Epic of Gilgamesh , the Iliad and the Odyssey . The stories demonstrate qualities in the hero which inspire respect , such as wisdom and courage: knowing things other men do not know and taking risks other men would not dare. [ citation needed ]

The energy, competitiveness and corporal daring of normal males are responsible for much good in the world. No one denies that boys’ aggressive and risk-taking tendencies must be socialized and channeled toward constructive ends. But the de–Tom Sawyering of the American boy should not be anyone’s agenda. I am sure it is not Newsom’s. Yet her film in progress suggests otherwise.
