There was little enthusiasm even for reprinting Eliot ’ s Indian Bible. “ It is a very sure, the best thing we can do for our Indians is to Anglicize them in all agreeable Instances, ” wrote Cotton Mather , “ and in that of Language, as well as others. ” The Indians could not retain their language, Mather insisted, “ without a Tincture of other Salvage Inclinations, which do but ill suit, either with the Honor, or with the design of Christianity. ” Although much diminished, the work that Eliot had begun continued
